Boat Buying 101
Whether you’re looking to buy your first vessel, or looking to expand your fleet, here are some basic tips and guidelines to help you pick the right boat for you!
Secure the necessary licenses and requirements: Before you even start considering buying a boat, you need to have a boating license and all the necessary requirements, including a boating safety certificate. Be sure to research the boater license and education requirements for your state, complete all necessary tests and courses, and keep your newly-acquired boat license with you whenever you’re out on the water, even if you’re not operating your own vessel.
Consider what type of boat you want: Think about what type of boat you need and what you plan to use it for. Do you want to use it primarily for fishing, cruising, sightseeing, or entertaining? Do you plan to bring a lot of people on board, or just yourself and one or two others? Do you need a lot of storage for equipment and supplies? Do you want a vessel that you can sleep in comfortably overnight, or live on for a couple of days? These are important questions to ask as they can determine the type, size, and price of your new boat.
Set a budget: Once you’ve identified what kind of boat works best for you, it’s time to determine your budget. It’s always a good idea to have a definite budget or even just an estimate, so you know how much you can shell out without spending too much. This is also a good time to think about whether you want a brand-new boat or a used one. Generally, while brand-new boats are guaranteed to be in pristine condition and equipped with all the latest electronics and designs, used boats can be much cheaper and more reliable, although they may need more maintenance and service.
Work with a broker: If you’re a first-time buyer, it might be best to work with a broker to help you negotiate the sale. A broker may have more experience in assessing boats and their features and could help you find the perfect match that’s also within your budget.
Assess and test your boat: It’s not enough to look at pictures and videos and believe everything an internet listing says. Before you decide to purchase, contact the boat’s dealer or owner for a viewing and a thorough inspection of the vessel. Be sure to check if all the parts and electronics work as advertised and take the boat out for a test run, if possible. If you encounter any problems during your inspection or test run, consider whether the problem can be fixed with some maintenance or service and if you’re willing to cover the costs. Otherwise, it might be best to keep looking for better options.
Close the deal: Found the boat of your dreams? Good! Now it’s time to close the deal. Check all the necessary paperwork and the final costs. Keep in mind that there may be hidden costs in addition to the asking price, such as broker fees, insurance, registration, maintenance, and additional accessories if the boat doesn’t come with it already. Ask about these hidden fees early on if you don’t want to be surprised by them later. Once you’ve decided on the boat, all that’s left is to sign the paperwork, pay the necessary fees, work out delivery and storage details, and you’re done! Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of a boat!
Remember to maintain it: So you’ve just bought a boat. Now what? Well, of course, you’d want to test it out right away! But remember, after you’ve had your fun out on the water, it’s important to maintain your boat and keep it in good condition. Conduct regular maintenance and cleaning, replace any old or faulty parts, and make sure to store it well when it’s not in use. Dry storage works best for the winter and during the off-season, or if you don’t plan to use your boat again for a long while.
